Alexander Technique Teacher

Training

During my training as a musician in 1989 I had debilitating stage-fright which led to my first wonderful experiences with the Alexander Technique. I left my lessons feeling lighter, taller, easier and happier. I was really intrigued how it affected my height, poise AND confidence. I took individual lessons for 10 years alongside my work in music administration with the CBSO and BBC Philharmonic. It was a relief, like coming home to myself, and gave me tools for self-management in dealing with many stressful situations.

During 2000-2003 I undertook the 3 year, full-time training course at Fellside, Cumbria Alexander Training to become an Alexander Technique Teacher with the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (M.STAT). I have a Post-Graduate diploma in Eutokia! a greek word for Happy Childbirth, training as a Duola, a non-medical companion to the birthing mother. I have been privileged to attend 5 births so far.

Experience

I have been teaching since 2003 in several multi-disciplinary clinics and work at Bodywise, Manchester, M4 and Therapy Rooms in Sheffield, S7 as well as my home Teaching Room in Nether Green, S11.

I really enjoy my work and am very passionate about it as I see how it helps transform people's awareness, self-care and enjoyment of life. Over the years I've concentrated much of my work specialising in working with people integrating emotions and traumatic events. Although many actors, musicians and athletes use the Technique to keep in peak performance, anyone can use it. My youngest pupil is 6 and the oldest 83 years old. It's a skill for life and living well.

Please visit my website www.lucyascham.com for more information about the Alexander Technique and my practice, workshops and classes.

Continued Professional Development

I regularly attend workshops and mentoring sessions as part of my professional development and lifelong love of learning and growing. This supports me to learn, to hone my skills and stay fresh and nourished. I am the Founder and Director of the Yorkshire Summer School for AT Teachers and CPD Weekends for my colleagues.

Accreditation

I have completed 1600 hours, a 3-year, full-time training course with the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) the largest governing body of teachers worldwide. All teaching members (M.STAT) adhere to the Society's published Code of Professional Conduct. We also hold professional indemnity insurance.

Visit the www.stat.org.uk for further information on the Alexander Technique and a full list of accredited teachers. There are also links to randomized control trials done which show very favourable results of patients using Alexander Technique for neck pain, low back pain and Parkinson's Disease.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check

In line with membership of my professional association (STAT) I hold an Enhanced Disclosure Criminal Record Check Certificate

Personal

I live in Sheffield with my son and enjoy singing, cycling and hiking. I have a meditation practice and facilitate Sitting Groups with Sheffield Insight Meditation and attend their silent retreats. I've restarted playing the violin to support my son and am enjoying it much more second time round. This time it's about enjoying the process, delighting in the detail of playing one note well, and no stress - it makes me smile to play.
